My Journey from South to North Iceland: Exploring East Iceland’s Hidden Gems and How I Recovered My Lost Drone
Iceland’s breathtaking landscapes make it the perfect destination for road trips, and I was lucky enough to embark on a journey from South to North Iceland, with a detour through the captivating East Iceland. On my trip, I captured incredible views, but something unexpected happened along the way — I lost my drone!
Luckily, this story has a happy ending, and I managed to recover it. You can check out the full adventure in my YouTube video here: Watch how I found my drone!.
The Road Trip of a Lifetime
Driving through Iceland feels like traveling through another world. My trip started in South Iceland, home to iconic sights like Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, and Reynisfjara beach with its dramatic black sand. Every stop along the way was postcard-worthy.
As I made my way toward East Iceland, the scenery evolved from coastal beauty to rugged mountain ranges and fjords. This lesser-visited part of the country is often overlooked, but I couldn’t resist spending some time exploring its untouched wilderness.
East Iceland’s Hidden Treasures
East Iceland is a magical place where you can escape the crowds and truly connect with nature. Some of the highlights from this part of my trip include:
- Stórurð (The Giant Boulders): A hiking trail that leads to emerald-green pools and huge boulders set against the backdrop of majestic mountains.
- Hengifoss Waterfall: One of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, where layers of colorful rock formations make for a unique and stunning sight.
- The East Fjords: Driving through the narrow fjords, I was constantly in awe of the towering cliffs and calm waters that created the perfect reflection of the sky.
The Drone Mishap
In such a stunning place, I couldn’t resist flying my drone to capture some aerial shots of East Iceland’s awe-inspiring landscapes. But then, disaster struck — my drone disappeared! I watched in disbelief as it lost connection and plummeted out of view.
I searched frantically for hours, trying to track it down, but it felt like finding a needle in a haystack. Luckily, I didn’t give up, and after retracing my steps and using some handy GPS tricks, I managed to recover it!
You won’t believe how it all went down. Be sure to watch my full story in the video here: How I Found My Lost Drone in East Iceland.
Continuing Northward
With my drone safely back in hand, I continued my journey north. The landscapes only got more dramatic as I approached the North, with stops at Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, and Lake Mývatn, where geothermal activity makes the area feel like another planet.
This road trip across Iceland was an unforgettable experience. Each part of the country has its own unique charm, and I encourage anyone visiting Iceland to take their time and explore beyond the well-known sights.
Final Thoughts
Losing my drone was a nerve-wracking experience, but it also became one of the most memorable parts of my trip. It taught me the importance of perseverance and paying attention to technology (and nature!). If you’re planning a road trip through Iceland, don’t forget to pack a sense of adventure — and maybe a backup drone!
